I love sci fi, fantasy, history, snark and good doggos. This series has all those things and was a really fun read!
What would you do if you went from nerdy college kids to jacked up awesome Superman? Nate gets to find out for himself in this wonderfully imagined take on Arthurian (as well as other mythos) legend. A must read through and through!
I thoroughly enjoy Luke Mitchell's books. I try to get them all on audiobook if I can because I spend a lot of time in my vehicle. Looking forward to the next one.
It's a fun conceit and Luke has an engaging writing stye. Despite his detailed and logical explanation, I do struggle a little with the lead character's slow development. There's very much a Thomas Covenant quality here where you just want the lead character to stop gazing so deep into his own navel and get on with it. A certain amount of doubt, a certain about of uncertainty, a certain amount of processing is all well and good, but I'm not sure a Fantasy Fiction book filled with hand-wavium science is the place for a deep sociological and psychological study. In the last third of the second book I'm also finding myself a little overwhelmed by the world building, it's as fast as the lead character's willingness to punch things is slow. That said, I do want to know what will happen next and the third book is already in my ebook library, so these are all more in the way of feedback than actual criticism. Let the romp romp!
Just ending the second book but enjoying the fast pace and wise-arse remarks by X. A good sense of humour. Also a quirky way to tell another tale of Merlin and the Knights of old.

Just started Excalibur Knights half way through in 2days and I want to strangle Nate for being such.a wimp! Just love the concept and the characters are so realistic I feel like part of the book. If the rest of the series is as good as book 1 I'm in for a great read thanks for the ride Luke🤩

My first book from Luke Mitchell. And in quite impressed with his story telling. Cast is well defined, though sometimes I get lost (but for only got a few paragraphs), became completely captivated by Nate and crew trying to make heads or tails on the events going on.Best I can do is heck just start reading.

So. First, I should admit that it's been a while since reading the first two in the series, so I've forgotten way too much. Gonna have to go back and fix that at some point.But oh wow. Things got epic. Characters got deeper. Stakes got raised so high they broke orbit. Thoroughly enjoyable, and I can't wait for the next one.

I admit, this series has started to really grow on me. The first book started kind of slow but it was kind of a "hero origin" tale, now author MITCHELL has much improved the story line, world building and characters to a level of page turning adventure that I expect. I am very pleased with this series, and look forward to the next installment! I have received this book with no expectation, nor an obligation of a review...This is an honest review.
Nate is a conflicted knight. Probably because they merely gave him basic training before throwing him out there on his own. But I also guarantee that while he's made quite a few mistakes on this adventure, he's gonna learn from them. Doesn't help that he's lonely either.Oh, and the Synth are here.
New characters are introduced that steal the show. Princess Elsa is my favorite. She has a main role in this book and it looks like she is set up to continue in future books. Oops, spoiler alert, she survives.... The book is a fun read, a bit long but definitely entertaining.
From the previous reviews I was having a certain expectation how this book will progress. And to a small degree I was correct. But it started to deviate from my preconception and I'm very thankful and delighted about this. Definitely a worthy read.
What a ride! Lots of danger, confusion and plenty of action to keep you turning pages.While Nate is really starting to get things figured out, he is still managing to get into plenty of trouble as he muddles is way though being an Excalibur knight. Some interesting character development, some new "friends" and some tragedies do a good job of rounding out this story.While this was a satisfyingly complete story, it did a good job of setting up for more in the future. Not to mention the interesting reveals in the epilogue.
I like the premise and the action sequences in this tale. I could resonate with the reluctant hero and at times could, as Excalibur was, become annoyed at his unawareness.More than once I was so engaged in the action that I found myself thinking, "just shut up and move!" This is how I knew this was a good read ... when you find yourself thinking you want to give the hero a swift kick...you know you're hooked!

The story just bounced around way to much. Main character thinking all the time bouncing around away from the actual story, useless stuff. Good likable characters but couldn't stick with story and have to read again to try and catch when he got back on topic. I'm out on anymore books
After a slow build, the story takes off into alien invasion, Arthurian legend territory, and puts the pedal to the metal. Great characters and intense action. I'm on #2 now!
As I've come to expect from Luke Mitchell, The Eighth Excalibur is a very enjoyable read. When I need to take a break from the dense neuroscience tomes and dry scientific studies I read every day, I know I can count on Luke for some light easy reading that I can relax and enjoy. It's the kind of book that I find hard to put down.You should definitely pick this book up and give it a read. You just might get hooked too.
This was a fun read with a sci-fi take on the Arthurian legend. The story line starts slowly getting all the parts into play and then moves at a good pace. The characters are fairly well developed however they don’t have back story’s. As I said, it’s a fun, easy read and I bought book 2 to see where it goes from here.

I am sorry. I am a huge fan of Arthur, and an Arthurian purist. I could deal with so much here, but Excalibur should always be double edged straight blade with a celtic look. End of Story.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this, it was different from what I thought the story would be. The story used the lines between fantasy, urban fantasy and space opera as a jump rope with a bit of techno thriller as seasoning. When I first started reading, I had thought this isn't worth my time but I'm glad I persevered. Can't wait to read the next book in the series

Gsve it five stars although I should resent a book I stayed up way too late to finish nonstop. It's an extremely enjoyable read!! I'll start the next book as soon as possible.
I went into this pretty sure that I'd enjoy it, since I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've read by Luke Mitchell. The start was a little slow, and there were a couple of times it felt like it was relying too heavily on certain character tropes, but as I look back, I kinda think that was on purpose.And then it all went crazy. In the best of ways for us readers, though perhaps less so for Nate and co. I laughed. Out loud. Multiple times. I cried. I couldn't put it down. And now all I can do is wait for the next one and tell everyone that this is a darn fun story that they should absolutely read.
This Scifi/Fantasy retelling of the Arthurian mythology has the beginnings of a great series. The nerds vs frat boys sarcasm was amusing. But this first in the series is apparently for character development. It took me until my Kindle said I was 31% into the book for the story to take off. And then it was down to the last 10% before our hero, Nate, supposedly an intelligent college senior, stopped whining about lost video game time and the unfairness of it all and got serious. The best characters so far are the ones we know the least about and are the most mysterious.There are good action scenes, mysteries to be solved, enigmatic characters and a room mate, Marty, who functions well as the stable adult of the group. Oh, and the dog may turn out to be the third smartest on the human side!The book ends with the cast in place, their characters developing well and the hero reconciled to his place. Plus, several interlocking quests have begun. It takes a while to get there, and the hero whines more like a thirteen year old than a college student, but once the story gets it's elements together it rocks and is well worth reading. Book two should be free of what I felt were shortcomings and be totally fantastic. I've already preordered.
